Revealed: my political leanings

I’ve lived through 13 US presidents and 17 UK Prime Ministers.

All with different styles, beliefs and err, morals.

Some have looked and felt unfit to govern. Others, inspiring and reassuring.

And their party members, ministers and officials. Some of them very strange, others more palatable.

But through it all (To quote Robbie Williams) my life has unfolded exactly as it should, given the circumstances of my birth, education and the opportunities presented to me.

I’ve evolved to become pan-political.
(Is that a thing? It is now.)

When it comes to business, taxes and money, I’m a conservative. Western society is a meritocracy, and it’s all the better for it.

People who create things that benefit us all should be incentivised to reap the rewards of their endeavours, with little interference from government.

On the other hand, I believe everyone should have access to welfare, healthcare and support if they need it. Nobody should be homeless, hopeless and penniless.

In that respect, I guess I have socialist leanings.

I’m a huge advocate of free speech. Everyone is entitled to express their opinions, just as everyone is entitled to be offended by them.

Heavy-handed censorship and cancel culture feels way too authoritarian for me, although I accept there has to be a line drawn somewhere between right and wrong.

In most areas of human behaviour, standards work better than rules. And that’s a more conservative thing, right?

Experiencing the effects of those 30 “world leaders” in my life so far, I can say this.

None of them has made a significant difference to my fortunes, good or bad.

I’d have made the same stupid mistakes and achieved the same levels of success with or without them, and been at more-or-less the same place I am right now.

Summary: I can’t wholeheartedly support any single party. That just seems too binary, divisive and compromised.
