The brilliant Walter Benjamin writes about the difference between information and illumination.
Infused in our society in the information age is a boredom, a laziness around the fundamental art of thinking.
We don’t want to think anymore, we simply want to know.
But there are things – essential things – for which there is no ready source of information:
- What you need to do to be happy
- How much you should love
- Why you are doing this
- When you should try harder
- When you should rest
You can’t find the answers to those pillars of a purposeful life in a book, or online.
Give yourself the time and space to work them out.
Turn away from more information, and seek illumination.
