I had a discussion with a coach today who told me she was full of self doubt, and of the belief that she couldn’t compete with all the free advice and information that people could readily download online.

Why, she said, would anyone pay me to show them what they can learn for themselves for nothing?

Well, I said, here’s why:

  1. If self-help worked, nobody would be obese, in a toxic relationship or be short of money
  2. On the contrary, over 1/3 of the Western World is overweight, 50{87a57dffff3f15402708bd6d4fa6cb73125da737a01ee576ca36cfcfa083af5b} of marriages end in divorce and 80{87a57dffff3f15402708bd6d4fa6cb73125da737a01ee576ca36cfcfa083af5b} of small businesses last a year or less

Whatever free information is out there clearly isn’t being understood or applied in any meaningful way.

As I said to my client, here’s what people want from you that they can’t get from a book:

  • Work out which bits apply to them, so they don’t have to
  • Hand-holding and support
  • Accountability
  • Motivation
  • Clarity
  • Momentum

If you can give them all that, you’re coaching, and they’re paying
