A FIVE-PART SERIES TO MAKE YOU QUESTION EVERYTHING
At a networking meeting last week, someone asked me about my values, as in, “what are your values, Jonny?”. I answered almost without thinking, as they’re values which I’ve had for years (although not all, forever), and which I now live by.
So we’re clear, I’m using “value” in this context to mean:
A non-negotiable moral or ethical position which defines thoughts, actions and behaviour.
Each day this week, I’m going to explain one of my five core values, and I’d love to know if they resonate with you.
- I always strive to leave the world better than I found it.
The trouble with statements like this, is that they’re easily seen as glib, empty promises.
Or, you might say, well so what? Doesn’t everybody try and do that?
Well, no. They don’t.
Here are some examples of people/organisations who plainly don’t care about the mess, misery and suffering they create:
- Cigarette manufacturers
- Gambling organisations
- Some financial advisers
- Most banks
- Drug dealers
- People smugglers
- Oil companies
- Some politicians
- Payday loan companies
- Gun manufacturers
I could go on, but you get the idea.
Is the primary purpose of what you do to improve the world, even one person at a time?
If it is, you share my first value.
Jonny
